The schools goal is that each student will graduate with the skills and abilities necessary for success in college, in advanced training, and in the workforce. Our school community shares these beliefs: The central interest of the school is the learner. Our schools are responsible for every learner. Experiencing success is essential to learning. Teaching and learning are an active process in which the teacher and the learner work together. Program improvement and professional development must be on-going. Each student should participate in a rigorous, relevant course of study. We share high expectations for student achievement. The school must be a safe and orderly environment for learning. Expected Schoolwide Learning Results (ESLrs) The goals for student learning are summarized below in two ways. The first way gives details; the second way is a quick mnemonic using PANTHERS. I. Academic Skills and Knowledge Students will demonstrate academic proficiency in the core curricular areas including mathematics, language arts, science, and social science. Students will produce high quality work through careful planning and revision. Students will demonstrate knowledge of content through: writing, speaking, multimedia presentations, visual arts, music, drama, and other forms of communication; critical thinking and problem solving; independent research; higher order thinking skills of application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. II. Creativity and Arts Students will foster their artistic talents by participating in courses and instructional programs such as music, drama, wood shop, drafting, art, and creative writing. Students will be exposed to various art forms, both contemporary and historical. Students will show innovation and creativity in their approach to schoolwork. III. Applied Learning and Technology Students will be versatile at using technology for research, organization, problem-solving, communication, and gathering and analyzing data. Students will apply their learning from the content areas to practical situations. Students sill be adept at word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheets, databases, Internet use, and other emerging applications. Students will be proficient at sifting through large amounts of information, making good use of information they need. IV. Social, Cultural, Community Awareness and Responsibility Students will contribute their time, energy, and talents to improve the quality of life in our schools and communities. Students will demonstrate awareness of and sensitivity to people who are different from them and have an understanding of the worlds various viewpoints, belief systems, and cultures. Students will work with members of the community on school-related projects. Students will demonstrate collaborative skills in social, academic, and extracurricular groups. V. Personal Awareness and Responsibility Students will develop and implement a personal plan for their school years and beyond. Plans will cover education, work, social relationships, and mental, physical, and emotional health. Students will show self-discipline, accept individual responsibility, and engage in positive social relationships in the school setting. Personal awareness -exploring and setting goals for your future (ESLR #5) Arts and creativity -appreciating and expressing yourselves through the arts (ESLR #2) Need to learn -becoming life-long learners Technology -using technology resources to complete projects (ESLR #3) Helping others -through community and school service (ESLR #4) Educating the mind -developing skills in reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking (ESLR#1) Responsibility -for your education, social relations, and work (ESLR #5) Social awareness -and sensitivity to other people and cultures (ESLR #4) EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENT BEHAVIOR SCHOOL BUS TRANSPORTATION School buses are operated as a convenience to students. Proper behavior is a necessity for safety's sake. Inappropriate behavior will jeopardize a students right to ride the bus. CARS AND DRIVING The rules of driving and safety outlined by the California Vehicle Code must be observed at all times. Students who violate these rules may lose the privilege to drive their cars on campus. Students may not be in cars at break. Auto stereo systems should not be heard on campus during school hours. 4. Parking around the Senior Oval is the privilege of seniors. OPEN AND CLOSED CAMPUS The privilege to leave campus during lunch is only for students in grades 9-12. This privilege may be revoked as a consequence of other misbehavior. If a student's behavior is inappropriate during lunch, that student will lose off-campus privileges. Students are not to be under the bridge during school hours, including lunch and break. Seventh and eighth graders may not leave the campus at lunch. THE ROLE OF THE STUDENT The school campus is a safe social and educational environment. Behavior during school and school events, including during rallies, sporting events, dances, and field trips, must allow students, staff, and guests to feel safe and respected at all times. Students should view learning as their primary focus at school. To this end, students are expected to maintain a positive attitude toward learning. All behaviors in the classroom must allow learning and teaching to take place. Since classroom management styles will vary depending on the subject being taught, students must adapt to the expectations of their different teachers. The classrooms and the library are considered places where respectful and studious behavior is displayed. All behaviors in the classroom should support, rather than distract, from the learning climate. Students should come to class ready to learn with the requisite materials: text, binder, writing implements, calculator, or gym clothing. Snacking, making telephone calls, socializing and visiting the restroom should be taken care of during break or lunch, or before or after school. Students should take an active role in the learning process. Students whose classroom behavior detracts from the learning environment should not expect high marks. Many teachers give students a participation grade. Not participating and being passive negatively affect the participation grade. The staff encourages positive relations among all students. We will not tolerate fighting or harassment of any kind. Intimidating behavior, physical violence, and threats of physical violence have no place on the campus. Consequences will depend on the nature of the offense. Repeat offenses will be dealt with more severely. Students should seek constructive ways to address any complaints they may have. Complaints about treatment by other students or staff members should be brought to the attention of a teacher or counselor or, in more serious cases, the principal or vice-principal. Complaints about programs and policies may be discussed with individual teachers or may be addressed to the student council. (See Student Complaints, p. 13) Technology AND Hardware Use Policy These rules apply to all school computers, audiovisual equipment, and other school equipment. There will be no: food or drink around equipment; rough use of equipment; inappropriate use of equipment. When there are more students than computers available, classwork will always take priority over personal interest uses such e-mail or surfing the net for amusement. Internet guidelines All students who use the Internet at school must sign this agreement: I agree that while I am on-line, I am considered to be on a school field trip and am representing my school. All rules of proper conduct for a field trip also apply to the Internet. I agree to read and follow the handout on the proper use of Network Etiquette (netiquette). I agree NOT to engage in illegal or questionable activities such as hacking, transmitting or storing copyrighted material, using obscenities, or harassing other users. I agree NOT to access illegal, obscene, or other questionable materials that are inappropriate for school. I agree NOT to share my account with others and NOT to use others accounts. I agree NOT to use the Internet for commercial purposes. I agree to immediately cease any activities deemed inappropriate by any member of the school staff. I agree NOT to transmit messages with someone elses name, phone number, or address on it. NETWORK ETIQUETTE (NETIQUETTE) AND PRIVACY Students are expected to abide by the generally accepted rules of network etiquette. These rules include, but are not limited to, the following: Be polite. Never send, or encourage others to send, abusive messages. Use appropriate language. Remember that you are a representative of our school district. You may be alone with your computer, but what you say and do can be viewed globally! Never swear, use vulgarities, or any other inappropriate language. Illegal activities of any kind are strictly forbidden. Maintain your privacy. Do not reveal your home address, personal phone number, or addresses or phone numbers of other students. Electrical mail (e-mail) is not guaranteed to be private. Messages related to or in support of illegal activities must be reported to the authorities. Do not read, copy, or print other peoples mail without their permission. Do not use the network in any way that would disrupt use of the network by others. Chat Rooms and Bulletin Boards are not to be accessed at school. Other considerations: Be brief. Few people will bother to read a long message. Minimize spelling errors. Make sure your message is easy to understand and read. Forgive the spelling and grammar errors of others. Use accurate and descriptive titles for your messages. Tell people what your message is about before they read it. Do NOT use all capital letters. This is read as yelling or screaming and is often taken as an insult. Get the most appropriate audience for your messages, not the widest. Remember that humor and satire are very often misinterpreted. Remember that all networks users are human beings. Dont attack correspondents; persuade them with facts. Cite references for any facts you present. Keep signatures brief. Only post messages to groups you know. Consequences for computer misuse: 1st offense The student will be issued a warning if the severity of the infraction is minimal. 2nd offense The student will not be allowed to use any school computer equipment for 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the severity of the offense. 3rd offense The student will not be allowed to use any school computer equipment for the quarter. 4th offense The student will not be allowed to use any school computer equipment for the remainder of that school year. For very serious infractions, the principal may enforce a more serious penalty at any step. DRESS CODE The following standards are designed to clarify appropriate apparel for school activities. The following criteria will be used to determine "appropriate" in any specific instance: student safety and health; distraction to the learning atmosphere; no gang relation or promotion; no promotion of drugs or alcohol or tobacco products. Listed below are the most common examples of appropriate and inappropriate clothing. We cannot enumerate every situation and will rely on the judgment of school staff. Shirts must cover the torso- e.g. no halter-tops, one-shouder tops, or half shirts; no bare midriffs. Pants must cover the buttocks. Underwear should not be visible. No short shorts are allowed. Guideline for shorts: if the flesh of the buttocks is visible, they are too short. No lace up pants are allowed unless they pass the finger-tip test. No skintight dresses or skirts. No mini- skirts are allowed. To help define short we will use the following criteria: if the hem of the skirt is higher than the tips of the fingers with the arms extended at the side, the skirt is too short. See-through apparel is permitted if clothes worn underneath cover the torso. Bandannas, hairnets, and do-rags are not allowed. For safety reasons, students must wear shoes while on campus. All apparel, including hats, jewelry, and other accessories, backpacks, binders, etc. must follow these guidelines: No advertisement or promotion of drugs or alcohol or tobacco products. No profanity or vulgarity; no racist messages or ethnic bashing. No gang writing. Public Notices Please have any notices that you want posted approved in the office. SEXUAL HARASSMENT Anderson Valley Unified School Districts policy is to provide an educational, employment, and business environment free from sexual harassment. Sexual harassment is illegal. Being able to behave respectfully toward others is an important skill to develop. Sexually harassing another student or teacher may result in suspension or expulsion from school. Sexual harassment is prohibited at school, at any school event, during lunch, on or off campus, or on school property at any time. Students are expected to maintain appropriate behavior toward other students and adults at all times. Students also have the legal right not to be harassed by any student, school employee, or visitor to the school. If you experience sexual harassment, tell the person to stop; then tell an adult school staff member. If you feel uncomfortable addressing the harasser in person, ask for a school staff member to help you resolve the problem. Matters of sexual harassment will be handled confidentially. The person to gauge whether a situation is sexual harassment is you. If someones behavior is sexual in nature, seems mean-spirited, or makes you very uncomfortable, please tell an adult. Sexual harassment is not confined to boy-girl interactions; it may occur in same-gender situations. Girls are sometimes harassers of boys. Sexual harassment can include comments about your sexual orientation. We cannot specify every possible example of sexual harassment, but here are some examples: Unwanted verbal comments about your appearance, your sex life, and/or your sexual orientation (includes comments or invitations made to you or about you, rude noises, jokes, etc.). Unwanted physical advances (includes intentionally touching or brushing against someone, making lewd gestures, blocking someones way, etc.) Written advances or written messages about you (includes graffiti, notes, letters, e-mail, etc.) Inappropriate visual messages (includes displaying your body suggestively, wearing clothing that is too revealing, wearing clothing that has an inappropriate logo, cartoon, or message on it, etc.) Continuing to express sexual interest in someone even after being told that the interest is unwelcome. Others may consider displaying affection towards another person in an intimate, sexual way sexual harassment. Any other behavior that is sexual in nature that creates an atmosphere of intimidation, hostility, or negativity in the school environment. PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF AFFECTION Couples are expected to be respectful of each other and to use good judgment in their display of affection. Public displays of affection may be embarrassing to others and will not be tolerated. When students are asked to moderate their behavior, they should consider it an on-going expectation at school. (See #6 in the examples given under Sexual Harassment above.) LOCKERS AND PERSONAL BELONGINGS Lockers are the property of the school. Students must keep their lockers in good condition and free from damage or graffiti. Students should not share their locker combinations with others. If a student believes his/her locker combination is known by others, he/she can ask the office to change the combination. Lockers may be opened and inspected at any time by the school administration. School personnel have the right to search and seize a students personal property when there is reason to believe that the student possesses something illegal or something which may be detrimental to the health, safety, or welfare of others. Students should not bring valuables or large amounts of money to school. Belongings should be marked with a students name and either kept in a secure locker or with the student. It is the students responsibility to take care of his or her belongings. Books and bags left in hallways or around school are frequently damaged or stolen. The school is not responsible for loss or theft of students possessions. Radios, Walkmen, tape recorders, CD players, cell phones, pagers, and electronic games should not be in operation during classes or in the library or lab. They may, however, be used during break and lunch. If one of these items is seen during class, it may be confiscated until the end of the day. On the second confiscation, the student will lose the privilege of bringing it to school. Students who work with emergency services (local fire department, ambulance crew) should register with the office so they may have their pagers turned on during class. POSSESSION OF WEAPONS Students shall not possess weapons or dangerous instruments of any kind in school buildings, on school grounds, on buses, or at school sponsored events away from school. Law enforcement will be contacted for possession of serious weapons. According to California State Law, any student found in possession of a weapon will be automatically expelled from school. TOBACCO POLICY It is illegal for both students and adults to use tobacco on school grounds or at school functions. (are you sure about the school functions part being illegal, Mary?) DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICY It is illegal and inadvisable for high school students to use drugs or alcohol, especially at school or at school activities. These policies are strictly enforced and have far-reaching consequences. Alcohol Use: When a student possesses or uses alcohol at school, the following must happen: Parent contact. One to five day suspension. Restriction from sports and other extra curricular activities for 45 school days. Expulsion from school for a second offense. Drug Use: If a student uses, possesses, or is under the influence of drugs on campus, the following must happen: Parent contact. Suspension for five days. Restriction from sports and other extra-curricular activities for 45 school days. Expulsion for sales, distribution, or a second possession or use. The following may happen for both drug and alcohol use: Contact of law enforcement, which may mean loss of drivers license for one year. Recommendation for expulsion. Referral to community counseling. STUDENT COMPLAINTS Complaints About General School Conditions, Policies, and Programs One of the jobs of Student Council is to address complaints of the student body. Your student council is always willing to help improve the school atmosphere and school rules in a way that benefits students. Suggestions for school improvement, additions to school programs, and group complaints may be taken to Student Council. You do not need to be a Student Council member to attend meetings. The minutes of the previous minutes and the time, date and place of the upcoming meeting are posted outside the door of room 7 in the high school hallway. Student Council also has an elected representative to the School Board who can carry your voice to school board meetings. The student newspaper, The Panther Press, is also a good forum for expressing student opinion. Letters to the Editor may be given to the editor or the newspaper advisor. If a specific person is the target of complaint, it is best to deal with this in a private, rather than a public manner. Complaints About Individual Teachers Students should try to voice complaints in the most respectful and direct way possible and are expected to exercise good judgement. Here is a general list of steps to follow, which is similar to the Parent Complaint Procedure that is part of school board policy. 1. If a student has a complaint about an individual teacher or program, it is best to speak privately with that teacher first. If you feel intimidated speaking privately with that teacher, you may choose to include your parents or a neutral staff member in a conference setting. 2. If the issue remains unresolved, the next step is to involve the principal or vice-principal. 3. If the issue continues to remain unresolved after following steps one and two, a student may want to enlist the help of his/her parents to schedule a closed session with the School Board. Threatening Situations There are some situations where a student should seek immediate help from an adult staff member and bypass the complaint procedure. Physical threats to your safety, sexual harassment, and overt racism are examples of this. GRADUATION and COLLEGE REQUIREMENTS GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Students will receive 5 credits for each semester course completed with a grade of A to D. Students must earn a minimum of the following credits in these subject areas: CREDITS English 40 Mathematics 30 Science 20 Physical Education 20 Social Science 35 Foreign Languages 10 Fine Arts 10 Health 5 Beginning Computers 5 Advanced Technology 5 Electives 75 Senior Project Pass/Fail Total 260 Minimum High School Graduation Requirements Class of 2004 ClassSemCrClassSemCrClassSemCrClassSemCrEnglish210English210English210English210Geography15World Hist210US History210Econ/Govt210Beg Comp.15Health15Phys. If so, the student will receive elective credit for the second year. *** Sports participation may fulfill physical education requirement. Literacy Standards Anderson Valley Unified School District has adopted literacy standards for grades 7-12. In high school it is a graduation requirement for all students to pass writing competency tests with a score of 3 (C) in both content and mechanics. Students will not receive credit for any English class in which they do not pass the required competency tests. There are a variety of ways for students who fail a competency test to remediate including after school tutorials, remedial courses, and summer school. GRADE POINT AVERAGE The following grade point conversion is used to compute grade point averages. Honors class grades are increased by one point for a C- or above. A+= 4B+= 3.3C+=2.3D+=1.3F=0A=4B=3C=2D=1A-=3.7B-=2.7C-= 1.7D-=1 On the student's transcript, the total grade point average (GPA) is the average of all grades received during high school, grades 912. All grades received in the sophomore, junior, and senior years, including those from PE, are used to compute the State College Grade Point Average. For the University of California, the GPA is the average of all grades received in grades 10-12 that fulfill the requirements specified in the "University of California Admission Requirements" section of this handbook. To compute a grade point average for other colleges, students should consult the admissions handbook for that college. Valedictorians and salutatorians are selected on the basis of G.P.A. and the depth and scope of their course schedule. HONOR ROLL Students who achieve a 3.0 grade point average for all subjects will earn honor roll status each quarter. All grades must be C- or higher for the student to qualify for the honor roll. Any D or F will automatically disqualify a student. INCOMPLETE GRADES A grade of Incomplete may be given when a student is unable to complete coursework due to an unavoidable absence. The student has two weeks from the last day of the quarter to make up the work missed. If the missing work is not turned in during the two weeks, the grades for the missing assignments will automatically be converted to Fs and the quarter grade averaged accordingly. UC/CSU College Prep REQUIREMENTS Students who anticipate attending a four-year college or university should complete the following coursework. All college prep coursework must be completed with a C grade or better. (The UC/CSU system does not consider plusses and minuses in computing high school grades.) The policy contained in this handbook represents the laws in effect in August, 1999. The Board will update its policies as the law changes and the changes will be reflected in subsequent editions of the Student Handbook. If a problem arises, please inquire in the office to see if this policy has been changed recently.) DEFINITIONS Tardy: The student is not in the classroom when the class is scheduled to start (when the tardy bell rings.) Students may be judged tardy if they leave the classroom to get materials, an admit slip, or take care of personal business. Excused Absence: The student misses one or more classes and the parent or guardian has notified the office of the absence and given a valid medical, legal, or religious excuse. Unexcused Absence(Cut): The student is absent or more than ten minutes late to a class without a valid excuse from the parent/guardian. Students are expected to attend school regularly. Students should only be absent from school for health reasons, family emergencies, and justifiable personal reasons, as permitted by law. It is the student's responsibility to find out what work he or she has missed and to make up that work, whatever the reason for the absence. When a student has more than ten absences in a semester, teachers are authorized by the Board to assign the student a failing grade for the term. The parent and student will be given a reasonable opportunity to appeal the failing grade to prove that the ten absences have been excused as described above, and show that the student has made up all missed course work with a grade of C or better. All appeals for a waiver will be strengthened if a student has completed the independent study assignments or regular classroom assignments specified by teachers during the course of his/her absences. Absences for authorized school activities (high school athletic games, school- sponsored field trips, performances with high school band or drama group, testing, and requested office visits); religious holidays; and quarantines shall not be included in the number of absences. However, students must still make up the class work for these absences or they may lose the privilege of being absent for authorized school activities. PARENT NOTIFICATION At the 6th absence, written notification will be sent by the high school office to notify parents. At the 8th absence, the principal or counselor will request a meeting with the student and parents. On the 11th absence the parent will be notified that the student may receive a failing grade, due to absences, and that there is an appeal process. PROCEDURE TO VERIFY ABSENCES AND OBTAIN ASSIGNMENTS If a student is absent from one or more classes for any reason, this procedure must be followed: 1. In the case of illness or other unexpected absence, the parent or guardian should call the office to notify the secretary of the absence. At that time the parent should arrange for assignments to be collected if he/she can arrange to have them picked up at the end of the day. If no phone call is received, office staff may try to reach the parent by phone. The final responsibility for determining and completing missed assignments rests with the student. In the event of an anticipated absence (i.e.. sports, field trip, dentist appointment), the student should obtain work from teachers ahead of time and complete it on time. When this is not done, the work may be considered late and credit for the work may be reduced. 2. When the student returns to school, he/she must report to the office for an admit slip. If the parent or guardian did not notify the office the day of the absence, he/she should either send a note, phone, or visit the office to provide office staff with the excuse. Students do not need an admit slip when they have been absent due to field trips, sporting events, or other school activities. 3. If the parent does not excuse the student by phone, note, or visit to the office, the absence will be considered unexcused (also known as a cut). A student may have the unexcused absence changed to excused by bringing in a note or having the parent call or visit the office. For unexcused absences, teachers have the option of allowing or not allowing students to make up missed work or reducing the grade on the work. 4. Students should have each teacher sign the admit slip. During long periods, the slips should be kept for two days. Admit slips are to be turned in to the last teacher who needs to sign it. 5. A student who needs to leave school during the school day must check out at the office. A parent/guardian must approve the dismissal with a phone call, note, or visit. Students should pick up an admit slip the following school day for those classes he or she has missed. HOW TARDIES AND UNEXCUSED ABSENCES AFFECT GRADES With every fourth unexcused tardy to a class, a students quarter grade will be lowered one whole grade. With each unexcused absence, a students quarter grade will be lowered one-third of a grade. In addition, teachers may also assign detention for each tardy. The office assigns detention for cuts equivalent to one hour of detention for each hour of school missed. Students who need to get materials for class, get an admit slip for the office, or need to take care of personal business after the bell rings will be considered tardy. Parents will be notified after the second tardy in any class. They will also be notified if their child has cut one or more classes. INDEPENDENT STUDY FOR EDUCATIONAL TRIPS AND PREARRANGED ABSENCES The school has set up an Independent Study Program to assist students in coping with prearranged extended absences. Credit can be earned for up to five days per year for trips that are of educational value. These days must be pre-approved by the principal with documentation from the parent showing evidence that the trip has educational value. Students must complete all assigned work at a satisfactory level. Trips of a purely recreational nature will not be considered as exempt days. Students may take these days, but they will count as part of the 10 day per semester limit. Students may also use these study packets, whenever possible, to document completion of assigned work during an excused absence. Students should pick up an independent study packet in the office one to three weeks before leaving in order to have time to read it and get any additional assignments from teachers. Parents also need to read through the packet, sign it, and monitor their child's work while away. Students need to spend at least four hours each day (35 min. per class) working on their independent study assignments in order to complete the assignments carefully. To insure full credit for work, the packet is due in the office the day the student returns to school. SCHOOL VISITORS To ensure the safety of our students, all visitors must register at the office upon arrival. Parents Parents are welcome to visit classrooms to observe the instructional program. They are to make arrangements with the teacher before hand and check in at the school office upon arrival. Conferences need to be arranged during non-instructional time. Parents who need to bring lunches, clothing, or other articles to their children may leave them in the office. Parents who need to contact students or staff, however briefly, must first register in the school office. Students Students who wish to have a friend visit the campus for a day should follow this procedure: At least one day before a friend is to visit, pick up a Visitor Pass in the office and ask each teacher to sign it. All teachers need to approve the pass for the friend to be able to come. Take the pass with all your teachers signatures on it to the office. This process must be completed at least the day before you want to bring your friend. The visitor must bring a book to read or school work to keep him or her occupied while sitting in classes Except under unusual circumstances, student visits will be limited to one day. A visitor should bring a book to read or schoolwork to keep him/her occupied during classes. VISITOR PASS Student's name Visitor's name Date of visit Visitor's age Reason for visit What will your friend do while he/she is in classes? ClassTeacher's Signature1.2.3.4.5.6.7. PROGRAMS, RESOURCES, ACTIVITIES CALIFORNIA SCHOLASTIC FEDERATION CSF is the AVHS honors club. Membership is granted each semester by evaluating semester grades using the standards of the state organization. Students may be honorary members in the second semester of 9th grade and the first semester of 10th grade. Official membership begins with the second semester of 10th grade, based on first semester grades. Students who are official members four or more semesters graduate with honors and are eligible for scholarships at some colleges and universities. Membership also entitles a student to attend CSF field trips. During the first four weeks of the new semester, the club's advisor uses the CSF formula to determine eligibility. An "A" is awarded 3 points and a "B" is 1 point. A student must receive a total of ten points, seven in academic classes, and receive no "D" or "F" grades to participate in this club. The list of eligible students is posted at school and published in the parent newsletter. Students who feel they have been left off the list or who have other questions about eligibility should contact the advisor. CAREER PATHWAYS AVHS has developed a Career Pathway curriculum in each of the following four fields of study: Business, Agriculture, Design Lab and Computer Science. The purpose of the Career Pathway is to provide students with a focused sequence of course work that will ensure a strong foundation in a chosen field of study. The Pathways prepare students to successfully enter the work world or pursue higher level training needed to achieve their long-range career goals. Each pathway has a primary teacher who serves as an advisor/mentor to each student, assists and provides career guidance and job shadowing experiences. When graduating, students may leave AVHS with both a diploma and a certificate of proficiency in their chosen field based on successful completion of required pathway courses and demonstrated mastery of skills. Some community colleges offer college credit for successful completion of AVHS's Career Pathways. DANCES AND SOCIAL EVENTS 1. Approval for dances is handled through the Student Council. 2. A student may invite one guest to a dance by putting the guest's name on the guest list in the office. The student inviting the guest is responsible for the guest's behavior. A student may lose the privilege to invite guests in the future if a problem arises. Guests may not be older than 19. 3. No one will be permitted entry to a dance or other social activity one hour after it has begun without prior permission of the principal. Students and guests attending the activity are expected to remain in the activity area once they have entered. Anyone who leaves the designated area, without obtaining special permission to do so, will NOT be readmitted to the activity. 4. A student who refuses the request of the advisors or chaperones or who exhibits other defiant behavior will be referred to the principal and will be barred from dances for the rest of the year. A student in the possession of drug or alcoholic substances, or who has been using drugs or alcohol, will be subject to the same penalties enumerated in the section on drug and alcohol use at school. (See p. 13) Non-students will be referred to the Sheriffs department for use or possession of drugs or alcohol or for defiant behavior. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Some examples of extracurricular activities are dances, field trips, and athletics. In order to participate in extracurricular activities, students in grades 7-12 must demonstrate satisfactory educational progress in meeting the requirements for graduation. To encourage and support academic excellence, the Board requires students in grades 7-12 to earn a minimum of 2.0 or "C" grade point average with no more than one F in order to participate in extracurricular activities. Quarter grades are used to compute eligibility. It is assumed that students participating in extra curricular activities meet behavioral expectations and follow school and board policies. A student must attend a full day of school on the day of any school activity to be eligible to attend the activity. This includes dances, proms, and participation in athletics. Students are responsible for work and tests missed for activities and should meet with teachers prior to the activity to make arrangements to make up work. EXAMS Anderson Valley High School offers a variety of exams during the school year. In October, 10th and 11th graders can take the PSAT. Beginning with the Class of 2006, all students must pass the High School Exit Examination (HSEE) to graduate from high school. A battery of STAR tests and two Golden State Exams are offered in the spring. LIBRARY AND STUDY HALL Library books may be checked out for a period of two weeks and may be renewed. Students are responsible for the care and return of library books and textbooks issued to them. The person who checked it out should report a lost or damaged book to the librarian as soon as possible. Such loss or damage is the responsibility of the person who checked out the book. Study hall in the library should be limited to those students who can work independently and are serious students with a very heavy work load. All others who need additional help should have study halls in classrooms with teachers or tutors. Study hall students are expected to have materials and schoolwork to occupy themselves AT ALL TIMES. Students who fail to use of their study hall time effectively or who misbehave will be scheduled into another class. If a student is tardy to study hall without excuse four times, the student will lose the right to have study hall and will be scheduled into another class. A study hall student must be in the library all period unless excused by the librarian. LOST AND FOUND Articles found in and around the school should be turned into the main office where the owners may claim their property by identifying it. OTHER RESOURCES FOR STUDENTS The following service providers are available to students: school counselor, Youth Project worker, school nurse, and Migrant Education services. Please inquire in the office for availability. RECYCLING POLICY The Anderson Valley Junior and Senior High School staff and students are working together to create a school where recycling is practiced. By making our school a site where our waste is reduced, reused, and recycled whenever possible, we take the role as models for the community, instilling the values of conscientious use and disposal of resources. Student Responsibilities: Understand what can be recycled, what can't, and where it goes. Reduce and reuse paper by using both sides whenever possible. Recycle paper and all other materials that you can by placing them in appropriate containers. Wait to print on the computer until you are absolutely sure that your document contains no errors and is in final draft form. SENIOR PROJECT The Senior Project offers real challenges that prepare students for life after high school: time and budget management, working toward a deadline, public speaking, interviews, community contacts, job experience, research skills, and self-discipline. The project consists of three phases that are briefly outlined below. A focused, 6 page formal research paper related to the students planned project is completed in English class. The paper will follow the MLA Guide and AV bibliography format. The project itself will fall into one of these broad categories: a product, an investigation, an apprenticeship, or a social service. Students will document their progress and the time they put into the projects. A minimum of 15 hours documented and verified by an adult who is not a family member is required. Execution of the project normally occurs between early March and late April. Students who want to start their projects earlier than that need to file for Early Approval. After completing both the projects and related research papers, students present what they have accomplished to a panel of one or more teachers and community members. This is both a public speaking performance and an interview. The panel will review the Letter of Intent, research paper, and any other documentation in the portfolio. Students who receive an evaluation of less than minimal achievement will have two weeks to remediate and reappear before the panel. Successful completion of all three phases of the senior project is an AVHS graduation requirement. STUDENT COUNCIL Student activities are conducted under the direction of the AVHS Student Council. Student Council positions include the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Publicity Director, and Student Representative to the School Board. The President and Vice-President of each class are also voting members of the council. Meetings are typically held every other Wednesday (although the dates and times can change each year) and are open to all students. Events directly sponsored by the student council include Homecoming Week activities. In addition, the Council provides a copy machine for the library, equipment for the senior booth, and input when policies concerning students are proposed. All activities conducted by classes or student clubs MUST receive permission from the Student Council. Student Council is also the body which hears student complaints. (See Student Complaints, p. 13) TELEPHONE The school telephones are for school business only. They may be used by students for medical or emergency situations. A pay telephone is located in front of the office. It should be used for personal calls. Students who use the office phone for other than medical or emergency situations will be charged $0.35 for a local call. Students are asked not to monopolize the phone if others are waiting. TEXTBOOKS All basic texts are loaned to students for their use during the school year. Textbooks are to be kept clean and handled carefully. Students who ruin or deface textbooks, school equipment, or materials will be charged their replacement cost. Final grades or transcripts will not be released until equipment has been paid for. WORK PERMITS Students under the age of eighteen who are employed during the school year are required by state law to have a Work Permit. A student with a firm job offer may apply for a Work Permit in the office. It is a violation of California State law for a student to work during school hours. ATHLETIC POLICY I. PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT The Board of Trustees of Anderson Valley Unified School District believes that participating on athletic teams should be an enriching experience for student-athletes who are willing to accept the discipline, privileges, and prestige which accompanies their participation. We want our school to be represented by students who have pride in themselves and their school and who will behave in a manner which reflects well on our community. There are many rewards to be gained through athletics, but these come only through hard work and dedication. II. ATHLETIC CODE Students involved in AV athletics will: 1. Demonstrate good sportsmanship, ethical conduct, and fair play. 2. Show respect and hospitality towards visiting teams, spectators, and officials. 3. Respect the integrity and judgment of officials and coaches. 4. Show a positive attitude toward their community, school, and teammates, both on and off the field. 5. Adhere to the rules and regulations of the California Interscholastic Federation. III. ELIGIBILITY In order to be eligible to participate in the AV Jr./Sr. High School athletic program, the student shall meet the following requirements: 1. Scholastics Every athlete must maintain a grade point average of 2.0, with no more than one "F" grade. Eligibility will be determined by quarter grades. 2. Conduct Students will maintain good behavior in school while participating on school teams. a. An athlete who has not served a detention in a timely manner may be deemed ineligible for the next game or contest. b. Students suspended from school may not participate in school-sponsored athletic events, including practice, during the time of suspension. In addition, a suspension from school for misconduct may constitute ineligibility for up to five (5) days following the day of suspension. Any ensuing suspension within a season will constitute immediate dismissal from a team for the remainder of the season. c. An ineligible player may not participate with the team in any way on game days, may not travel with the team, and may not wear his/her uniform during the period of ineligibility. d. All ineligibility decisions based on conduct will be made by the principal or the Principal's designee. e. Any athlete found using tobacco products (cigarettes or "chew") during school or in attendance at school events will be subject to the following consequences: First offense in a school year: The student will be suspended from participation for five school days. Second offense in a school year: The student will be suspended from athletic program for the duration of the season. f. Athletes will refrain from using, possessing, or furnishing alcohol or illegal drugs. The consequences for infractions of the above are: First offense in a school year: The student will be suspended from participation for a minimum of four weeks and will be on probation for the next two semesters. The student may be required to attend a rehabilitation program to resume participation in the sport. Second offense in a school year: A second offense while the student is on probation will result in suspension from representing AVHS in sports programs for a minimum of 16 school weeks. g. Any athlete found guilty of willfully defacing, stealing, or destroying school fixtures or equipment at home or away will be disqualified from further athletic participation for the balance of the sport season, or five weeks if the offense occurs near end of that season. The guilty athlete must provide restitution for any damages and write appropriate apologies for the action. Legal action shall be considered for serious infractions. The five week suspension period under this rule will be applied to the next sport in which the offending athlete participates. 3. Attendance a. A student must be in school all day on the day of an event or all day on the school day before a weekend event in order to be eligible to participate in that event unless he/she is specifically excused by the principal or the principal's designee. (NCL I rule adapted by AVHS.) For an excused absence such as a doctor's appointment, the student is responsible for contacting the principal. b. An athlete with three (3) or more unexcused absences in a quarter will be dismissed from the team for the remainder of the season. c. Athletes are expected to attend school on time the day following a school night sporting event. Failure to do so may result in ineligibility for the next game. d. Athletes are to notify their teachers prior to missing class for a sporting event. They should have the work for missed classes completed in the time frame set by the teacher. 4. Physical Examination A student must pass and submit verification of a physical examination by a licensed California physician within the past 12 months, which declares the student fit to participate in competitive sports. 5. Medical Insurance A student must submit verification of adequate insurance, as required by CIF, and signed by parent/guardian, before participating in a sport. Inexpensive insurance may be purchased through the school. 6. Age Requirement To participate in a sport during the ensuing school year, students must be under the age of 19 on September 1 of that school year. IV TRANSPORTATION Athletes must travel to and from contests away from Anderson Valley High School in transportation provided by the school. The only exception is a prior arrangement made between the participant's parent/guardian and the principal for the student to ride with the other authorized individual(s). V EQUIPMENT Every athlete is responsible for any equipment or uniforms issued. If any loss or undue damage occurs, the student will be responsible for repair of replacement costs. No additional equipment will be checked out to a student until lost or damaged equipment is returned or replaced. VI DROPPING/CHANGING A SPORT 1. Players may change from one sport to another with the permission of both coaches involved. It is the player's responsibility to contact both coaches before practicing the new sport. 2. A player who wishes to drop a sport in mid-season must make his/her reasons for doing so known to the coach or, if the player prefers, to the principal. VI PRACTICES If a student must miss a practice, he/she should notify the coach in advance and give a reason. Practice rules will be explained by the coach at the pre-season meeting. Missed practices may result in a student not participating in the next game. VII APPEALING A SUSPENSION A student who wishes to appeal a suspension from a team may submit a written statement to the principal for consideration.
