Teen Center 2009

The gathering place:

The Teen Center is located downtown behind the Methodist Church. It is a place where everyone is welcomed to kick it, play pool, watch movies, play fuse ball, board games or the assortment of video game systems. It is a comfortable place with couches and a snack bar. It is a safe place that is supervised by the youth coordinator or an adult volunteer. It is open Friday Nights from 7-10. The space is also available for teen use at other times with prior arrangement, for example, if you want to have a dance, arrange a BBQ, or set up a meeting, art project, paint the walls or whatever, all you need to do is contact the teen center coordinator.

The Board of Directors:

The Teen Center was created by teen in 2004 and continues to run by a board of directors made up of seven teens and seven adults from the community. At the start of each new school year, teens who are interested in getting involved are invited to attend the first board meeting of the year (Wednesday Sept. 9th 5:00 at the teen center). At the meeting, all present will vote on the student representatives under the following: Public Representative, Treasurer, 2 Student Trip Coordinators, Teen Center Event Coordinators, and 2 Lead Fundraisers. Each of these positions holds a specific responsibility, but all student board members vote on events, trips and general decisions regarding the teen center. Time commitment equals attendance at monthly board meetings, participation in some teen center fundraising efforts and community events, and enjoying trips of interest. If you are interested in learning more about how non-profit organizations work, building connections with your community, fundraising, event planning, outdoor activities or would like to bring a new dynamic to the teen center this year, being on the student board is a great way to gain experience, build your resume, and make happen the events and trips that you and your classmates want for this year and next summer.

Trips and Events:

Over the past years the teen center has taken trips to ski, snowboard, snow shoe, canoe, shows and museums in San Francisco, participated in Rural Mural Project, hosted open gym, movie nights, Frisbee golf tournament, kept a bike shop, a coffee bar, purchased a PA sound system for community use, backpacked, rock climbed, hosted the first disc golf tournament and stained-glass window workshop, planned art auctions and dances, and just had a good time at the Teen Center gathering place. A canoe trip is already planned fro this September and there is interest in hosting a Haunted House, dance-a-thon, camp-out, and/or continuing some of the trips from the past. Have ideas? If you like these ideas or have some different ideas about what to do this year come and be heard, everyone is welcome.

Teachers and Staff: Please let me know of any students you think would enjoy and benefit from participating on the Teen Center Board. First meeting is being held Wednesday Sept. 9th at 5:00 in the Teen Center. Questions? Call Meade at 391-6958.
