Empowering our Students to Succeed!

Independent Study

Dear AVU Families,

We look forward to welcoming students and staff in-person, five days a week for the 2021-2022 school year, which begins Tuesday, August 17, 2021.

We want to make you aware that Assembly Bill 130 requires AVU to notify parents and guardians of enrolled students that they have the option to enroll their child in in-person instruction or Independent Study for the 2021-2022 school year.  We encourage all students to return to in-person, five day a week instruction, but we know some families may want to have an alternative option. We want to ensure that all families are aware of this option.

Conference

Parents and guardians have the right to request a search-parent-educator conference to ask questions before making the decision about enrollment or disenrollment in the various options for learning. The conference may be conducted by telephone, videoconference or in-person. If you wish to request a conference for your child/student, please contact Charlotte Triplett, grades K-6, at ctriplett@avpanthers.org) or  Stefani Ewing for grades 7-12, at sewing@avpanthers.org preferably by Friday, August 6, 2021.

Procedures for Enrolling, Disenrolling and Reenrolling in AVA's Independent Study

To enroll in Independent Study for the 2021-2022 school year, there must be an agreement in place for each student. The agreement must be signed by the student’s parent, legal guardian, or caregiver. For students with exceptional needs, the individualized education program (IEP) or 504 must specifically provide for independent study before the student can begin participating.

If you wish to have your student return to in-person instruction during the school year, you may provide notice to the contact information provided below, and your student will be returned to in-person instruction no later than five instructional days after we receive the notice.

Students may re-enroll in Independent Study at any time during the 2021-2022 school year by providing written notice to Elementary Principal Cymbre Thomas-Swett or Jr./Sr. High Principal James Snyder.

Instructional Time that a Student Will Have Access to as Part of Independent Study

For transitional kindergarten through 3rd grade, there will be a plan to provide students opportunities for daily synchronous instruction.

For grades 4 through 8, there will be a plan to provide opportunities for both daily live interaction and at least weekly synchronous instruction.

For grades 9 through 12, there will be a plan to provide opportunities for at least weekly synchronous instruction.

Live interaction means interaction between the student and the teacher, aide or other personnel and may include peers; this interaction may be in person, by internet or phone.

Synchronous instruction means classroom-style instruction, or small group, or one-on-one instruction delivered by computer or phone and involving two-way communication between the student and teacher.  Asynchronous instruction is independent assignments not requiring the direct interaction of the teacher.

Visit AVU’s website at High School Independent Study or Elementary Independent Study to learn more.
